Dota 2 Installer for GNU/Linux
This project aims to create easy-to-use installer for Dota 2 (and Steam) for Linux-based x86 PC computers.
While Dota 2, Steam and Source engine are only available for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OSX, this project is based on Wine technology to run Dota 2 Windows binaries under Linux.
The main object of this project is to provide playable installation of Dota 2 under Linux, as it would be a native port. Installer is shipped with working Wine binaries which does not conflict with possible existing Wine installation and installer also configures Steam and Source engine so gaming performance would be at its best. Everything is done automatically, so user does not have to do these tricks manually - only follow the instructions which installer gives. Fundamentally, installer works like PlayOnLinux and other similar projects, but aims to be more elegant, updated more frequently and works with best possible and tested Wine binaries while it focuses just for one game.
This installer is written in C and BASH.
This is an unofficial fan-made installer and is NOT affiliated with Valve, Steam, Source Engine or IceFrog. Any technical problems or bugs considering installer should be reported to the maintainers of this installer, NOT to Valve.
This project, including installer binaries and website, is under active developement. No public binaries are yet available.
My previously mentioned "secret" was that I was making a new installer which supports all Source engine games, not just Dota 2. It was progressing nicely, but now there is simply just no idea to continue with developing. You can find the unpublished project site here: Source4Linux25. February 2012
Oops, no first public release yet even though several months have passed. This is because I spent my Christmas holiday actually playing Dota 2 ( :D ) and I started my mandatory military service in January. That's why I haven't had much time to develop this installer, because all possible freetime which I have I usually spent having fun and something like that. So there hasn't been much activity here for several months - until now.
Now I started making this installer again from the scratch, using C++ and Qt. However, the concept of this installer will be much different than I planned originally, but I will keep it as a secret for now. The main point of this update post is simply this: I'm working with this again. Hopefully we will get a working release somewhere in the near future...

Yay! I finally got my Dota 2 beta key so I will be able to continue developing this installer. I'm intended to do that on my Christmas holiday because currently I'm kinda busy with my school and other personal life things. Furthermore, I've been thinking that I could rewrite some or all code with C++ because I've learned that this autumn - and GUI is much easier to do with C++ and Qt. Well, let's see what happens, but hopefully first public release will be available this year!

Long time no updates on this site... Unfortunately I haven't got a spare Dota 2 Beta Key, which means that developement of this installer has been stalled for a while. Besides I have lots of things to do in my private life, so there hasn't been much time or motivation to search for a spare beta key and start playing Dota 2.
Don't get me wrong - this project is NOT cancelled, but there hasn't been much activity recently. I'll continue with developing when I find time for myself and get a spare Dota 2 Beta key.
And oh yeah, by the way, I started my own blog, check that out if you can speak Finnish (no English blog posts there yet, unfortunately).
